Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. I’m sharing what has worked for me on my journey using essential oils to support my health.
Over the past couple of years, I have incorporated essential oils into my everyday life. I add them to my homemade personal care and cleaning products. Often I diffuse them to clean the air, boost my immune system, or even lift my mood.
I also make DIY roller bottle blends to naturally help ailments from allergies to menstrual cramps to aiding sleep. Today I’m sharing my roller bottle recipe created to ease headaches.
If you are new to essential oils, it’s important to educate yourself on these natural but powerful substances. In my basic guide to beginning with essential oils, I cover the importance of using pure oils, how to find a company that produces them, and safe dilution practices.
Some Things to Keep in Mind:
- If you haven’t used essential oils before always start with the smallest amount of oil or lowest dilution percentage to see how your body reacts. Avoid using it around your face and other sensitive areas until you’ve tested it.
- This DIY is for an adult so do not use on children. Some oils should not be used on kids. A low dilution percentage is usually recommended when applying oils topically to children.
- Be cautious using oils around pets
DIY Roller Bottle to Ease Headaches
Peppermint essential oil is cooling to the skin, helps relieve the acute pain brought on with headaches, and can ease any nausea or queasiness that may accompany a migraine. Eucalyptus essential oil also contains pain reducing properties. It helps clear up congestion and ease breathing which is helpful for cluster or pressure headaches.
What you need:
- a 10 mL glass bottle that isn’t clear (you want to protect the oils from UV light) with a roller ball in its housing and a cap
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
- 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- a carrier oil (I use fractionated coconut oil)
A 10 mL bottle is equivalent to 2 teaspoons. So using Plant Therapy’s Dilution Chart and wanting a 3% dilution, I can add 9 drops of essential oil to my bottle.
I use 5 drops of peppermint and 4 drops of eucalyptus for this blend.
After counting my oil drops, I top the bottle off with my carrier oil. Then I push the roller ball in, screw the cap on and shake it well to mix.
I make sure to label my bottle with the ingredients, the dilution percentage, and the date made.
I apply this roller bottle to my forehead, temples, and the back of my neck as needed.
Variation on this blend:
I recently tried CBD infused fractionated coconut oil for its pain relieving benefits and it worked wonders for headaches. I now use the same essential oil combination but with CBD oil as my carrier oil to top off the roller bottle.
Other Recipes I Use These Ingredients For:
- I add fractionated coconut oil to my homemade shampoo. For stronger menstrual cramp relief, I’ve switched to the CBD infused coconut oil to top off that roller bottle blend too.
- I use both peppermint and eucalyptus in my sinus relief roller bottle.
- Both oils are part of combinations I diffuse in the mornings to help wake up.
