Using Essential Oils to Help Sinus Issues

,

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. I’m sharing what has worked for me on my journey using essential oils to support my health.

Lately I’m getting more and more into using essential oils to support my mood, help prevent illness, and as a safe addition to my DIY cleaning products for my home.

I buy my oils from Plant Therapy. There are tons of options out there for essential oil companies. I recommend doing your research to see which is the best fit for you. Since essential oils don’t fall under FDA regulations, I appreciate the companies that conduct business transparently. Just because the packaging says pure or therapy grade doesn’t mean the oil is. Look for companies who do third party testing and share their lab results with the public.

Plant Therapy does this and also allows you to track the exact batch your bottle came from and see what it’s comprised of. I believe Plant Therapy is reasonably priced for a high quality product. I also appreciate their wide range of organic oils. Their blog is full of valuable information for learning about and using essential oils safely too.

Some Things to Keep in Mind:

  • If you haven’t used essential oils before always start with the smallest amount of oil or lowest dilution percentage to see how your body reacts. Avoid using it around your face and other sensitive areas until you’ve tested it.
  • This DIY is for an adult so do not use on children. Some oils should not be used on kids. A low dilution percentage is usually recommended when applying oils topically to children.
  • Be cautious using oils around pets.

DIY Roller Bottle Using Essential Oils to Help Sinus Issues

Essential Oils to Help Sinus Issues

According to the book, Modern Essentials, eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary essential oils can help sinus issues. Eucalyptus and peppermint are both known to support the respiratory system among other benefits. Rosemary helps with sinus infection while also supporting the respiratory system.

What you need:

  • a 10 mL glass bottle that isn’t clear (you want to protect the oils from UV light) with a roller ball in its housing and a cap
  • rosemary essential oil
  • peppermint essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil
  • a carrier oil (I use fractionated coconut oil)

There’s a little bit of math involved to make sure you get a safe dilution for the oils you are using. Again, Plant Therapy is a great resource for this. They have a Dilution Chart that makes it very easy to figure out. According to the labels on the back of my oil bottles the recommended dilution percentages are:

  • Rosemary 4% dilution
  • Eucalyptus 2-4% dilution
  • Peppermint 2-3% dilution

A 10 mL bottle is equivalent to 2 teaspoons. So using their chart and wanting a 4% dilution, I can add 12 drops of essential oil to my bottle.

For this blend I start with 4 drops of rosemary, then 4 drops of eucalyptus, and 3 drops of peppermint. I used 3 drops of peppermint rather than 4 because my oil bottle recommends no higher than 3% for that oil. Looking at the plant therapy website it states you can use up to a 5% dilution for peppermint. In the future I may use one more drop of peppermint in this blend.

Next I top it off with my carrier oil. Finally I push on the roller ball and put on the cap and shake it well to mix.

I make sure to label my bottles with the blend name, the dilution, and the date made. If I can fit the ingredients on the label I add them. Otherwise I make a note of the ingredients mixed in my notebook.

I apply this directly to my sinus areas being careful of my eyes. I find it especially helpful to apply it before bed if I’m having sinus issues.

Other Things I Use These Three Oils For:

  • I use peppermint as part of a roller bottle recipe to help with allergies.
  • I like to diffuse these three oils together to help aromatically with respiratory issues.
  • Sometimes I open the peppermint bottle just to take a breath of it. It helps with alertness.
  • I use peppermint and eucalyptus together in a different roller bottle to help with headaches.
  • I love adding rosemary to my homemade shampoo. It helps maintain a healthy scalp and promotes hair growth. I also add it to my husband’s beard oil.
