This DIY air freshener is a fantastic way to cut down on cost, packaging waste, and chemicals in your home. Many commercial air fresheners contain allergens and toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and phthalates that are known to pollute your indoor air.
With just 2 ingredients this recipe is a simple, cost effective, and natural solution for avoiding toxic air fresheners.
Baking soda is the main ingredient in this recipe. It’s great for absorbing odors and neutralizing negative scents. You could simply use baking soda for that reason. But when combined with the natural scents of essential oils, the air freshener is even more powerful and leaves a pleasant aroma in the air.
While I love my diffuser, it’s nice to have a recipe that is easy to create and then leave be. This is also perfect for smaller rooms like bathrooms where you wouldn’t want to run a diffuser all the time.
The possible combinations of scents using essential oils are endless but today, I’m sharing 3 of my favorite blends to drop into this DIY air freshener.

How to Make Air Freshener
Place the 4 oz mason jar upside down on the coffee filter and trace an outline. Cut the coffee filter down to the circle. This creates a breathable lid for later.
Measure out the baking soda and add it to the mason jar.
Count out the desired drops of essential oil. Mix throughout the baking soda.
Place the coffee filter on the top of the jar and secure in place with the canning ring.
Keep natural air freshener in desired location. Shake once a week to refresh scent. Add new drops of essential oil about once a month.
Other Recipes I Use These Ingredients For:
- I use baking soda in my simple 3 ingredient dish soap, deodorant, homemade shampoo, DIY toothpaste, and basic mouthwash.
- Tea tree and lemon essential oils are both in my all purpose cleaning spray recipe.
- Many of these oils feature in my favorite diffuser blends for morning energy, purifying the air, and immune support.
- I use lavender in a roller bottle to aid sleep, tea tree to help with skin ailments, and peppermint with eucalyptus for headache relief.
