The days are getting longer and with that comes the importance of good rest. With the April focus of my year of health being on sleep, this month seemed like the perfect one to share a few of my go-to diffuser blends to promote sleep.
Diffusing calming essential oils before bed is a great way to signal your body that it’s time to unwind. Oils like lavender, vetiver, and frankincense can help you relax your mind and body, the first steps to a good night of rest.
These diffuser combinations are for my 120mL diffuser so adjust accordingly for your own. A good guideline is to start with 3 to 5 drops of oil per 100mL of water. It’s always easier to start on the lighter side and add more drops of essential oil if needed. Consider the size of the room you’re diffusing in and who will be in it.
Something to Keep in Mind: Diffusing essential oils is one of the safest ways to use them but always be cautious when diffusing around children, pets, and those with asthma or allergies.
Here are four of my favorite diffuser blends to promote sleep:
2 Drops Lavender and 2 Drops Eucalyptus
Lavender is the universal oil for creating calm and relaxation. In this simple combination of herbaceous scents, lavender unwinds the mind and body while eucalyptus offers respiratory support to ease breathing through the night.
1 Drop Lavender, 1 Drop Cedarwood, 1 Drop Eucalyptus, and 1 Drop Frankincense Serrata
In this blend, lavender and eucalyptus offer the same benefits as above. Cedarwood helps calm emotions while frankincense serrata offers a double punch of clearing the mind and also promoting clear breathing. This combination has a nice relaxing spicy and woodsy scent to it. All the oils mellow one another out.
2 Drops Lavender, 1 Drop Cedarwood, and 1 Drop Vetiver
These oils combine in a comforting sweet and earthy scent. Vetiver is a powerful root oil that promotes balance and can help calm the mind before sleep. All three oils in this blend are known for their relaxing and calming properties.
2 Drops Frankincense Frereana, 1 Drop Clary Sage, and 1 Drop Vetiver
The earthy tone of vetiver and woodsy scent of frankincense frereana balance the strong floral aroma of clary sage in this diffuser combination. Vetiver relaxes the mind while clary sage soothes especially in times of emotional stress. Frankincense frereana relaxes the body, uplifts mood, and also boosts the immune system.
Synergy Blends:
Plant Therapy has both a Relax Synergy essential oil and a Tranquil Synergy blend to diffuse for an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. I tried these out when I purchased their top 14 blends set. Unfortunately both contain patchouli, which my nose seems to be very sensitive to so these blends haven’t worked well for me.
Other Essential Oils to Promote Sleep:
- chamomile
- majoram
- sweet orange
- bergamot
- basil
- ylang ylang
- sandalwood
Other DIY Recipes to Aid Sleep:
- I use lavender in a roller bottle recipe that I apply to the bottom of my feet to aid sleep.
- I combine lavender, vetiver, clary sage, and cedarwood to make a pillow spray that freshens linens and promotes rest.
