What I’ve Been Reading Lately: June Quick Lit

I love the Modern Mrs Darcy book blog! I’m a fan of all of Anne Bogel’s work actually. I’ve read and loved two of her books. I have a post on Reading People: How Seeing the World through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything as one of my favorite intro to personalities books. I’m on my library’s waitlist for her most recent work, Don’t Overthink It.

I never miss an episode of her weekly podcast, What Should I Read Next, where she interviews a guest on their reading life and gives book recommendations based on three books they loved and one book they hated. Summer is right around the corner and Anne Bogel is known for her summer reading guides so if you need any book recommendations for this upcoming season, go check that out!

Once a month on the 15th, Modern Mrs Darcy hosts a Quick Lit Link Up, where the bookish community can share what they’re reading lately. I’m participating for the first time with a mid month glimpse into my reading life.

What I’ve Been Reading Lately in June:

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

what I've been reading lately June

I started my reading month with the second book in Marissa Meyer’s Renegades trilogy, Archenemies. It was a little slow starting out for me but by a third of the way in, I was hooked again. The book follows Nova and Adrian’s stories as they both struggle to figure out how to help the world and keep their secret identities hidden from one another. The end made me really sad since I have to wait at least 6 more weeks for my hold on Supernova to come through!

Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson & Shannon Watters

I recently signed up for Kindle Unlimited to give it a go while there’s a two month trial period. My library’s online catalog has been saving me during these weeks of closure. I thought having access to more online options couldn’t hurt though. I was especially drawn to the collection of comic books and graphic novels offered through Kindle Unlimited.

The first two I checked out were volumes of the Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson and Shannon Watters that my library didn’t offer. I caught up on Volume 3: A Terrible Plan and continued the series with Volume 5: Band Together. I love escaping into this world! The story follows 5 friends at a girls summer camp where they sometimes have to battle supernatural elements in the woods. Time moves slower there. They’ve had tons of adventures and it’s only been two weeks. At camp they learn that friendship is often the most powerful force. Friendship to the max!

Ayurveda by Sahara Rose Ketabi

what I've been reading lately June: Ayurveda

My current nonfiction book is Ayurveda by Sahara Rose Ketabi. I first heard about Ayurveda during a yoga class years ago. I thought it had to do an eastern way of eating at the time. Which to be fair is part of it. Recently after listening to an interview with Ellen Carr on the Slow Your Home podcast, I heard the term come up again as it related to doshas and understanding how you deal with stress. I began reading her blog and took her dosha quiz. From there I knew I had to learn more about the sister science to yoga. It is the world’s oldest health system at over 5000 years old and the framework on which modern medicine is built. But ayurveda offers a preventative framework to balance the body, mind, and spirit, something that I’m very drawn to at the moment.

When We Believed in Mermaids by Barbara O’Neal

what I've been reading lately June: When We Believed in Mermaids

I’m currently reading Barbara O’Neal’s When We Believed in Mermaids. It came to me highly recommended by a friend who read it earlier this year. So when I saw it available on Kindle Unlimited and needed a new fiction book, I went for it. So far I’m really enjoying the mystery. It’s especially fun for me because I grew up in California and I spent a year and half in New Zealand so both settings are familiar to me and fun to revisit.

Strong Female Protagonist by Brennan Lee Mulligan

I gushed about Strong Female Protagonist in my May reading life glance. Last week, I read the next issue and what is available of the final chapter on the comic’s website. It looks like it’s been a couple years since Brennan Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag have updated it. I’m glad they have found so much success with other projects and I hope they find the time to finish it soon. The whole comic is online for anyone who wants to check it out!
