What I’ve Been Reading Lately: July Quick Lit

I can’t believe we are halfway through July already. My reading life has slowed down a bit this month. To be honest, I’ve been spending too much time trying to figure out the business side of Pinterest! I got to dust off my photoshop skills and now its my latest fixation.

I picked a bad time to for a new obsession though. All my Libby library holds came through at once. I’m hoping to get through the bulk of it this month still. I don’t want to wait weeks again for some of them.

I’m sharing this mid month glimpse into my reading life as part of Modern Mrs Darcy‘s Quick Lit Link Up. You can read all about why I love Modern Mrs Darcy in the last post. Every month on the 15th, she hosts a blog post where the bookish community can share and link what they’re reading lately.

What I’ve Been Reading Lately in July:

Magnificent Ms. Marvel Vol 1: Destined by Saladin Ahmed

What I've Been Reading Lately July - Magnificent Ms. Marvel

I’m still learning about comic books and all the crossovers and different series that follow the same superheroes. I like to read things in order and I have a hard time figuring out the chronology when there are so many issues.

When I saw a new Ms. Marvel series available on Kindle Unlimited, I had to check it out. This is the first volume of the Magnificent Ms. Marvel comics that came out last year. Its a follow up to the original series, which I still haven’t finished, so there were a few spoilers. I loved it though! The characters had a lot more depth and it felt like there was a ton packed into the story. I was surprised to look it up and see that the story was the same page length as others. It felt longer in a good way.

Saga Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

What I've Been Reading Lately July - Saga

I first heard about this graphic novel series on Book Riot’s Get Booked podcast. It’s been recommended several times so it was top of my list to read from Kindle Unlimited.

The recommendation did not disappoint! I can’t wait to check out more of this series. I may actually reread this volume first. These are definitely graphic novels for adults. They contain explicit sex scenes along with graphic violence. I’m very intrigued by the two main characters and their pasts as well as this universe. Lots of characters were introduced in this first volume but I’m not sure how they all fit in. I also thought it was cool how the baby is telling some of the story with her narration showing up ghostly throughout certain scenes.

Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness

What I've Been Reading Lately July - Time's Covert

I finished up Deborah Harkness’s All Souls trilogy in May after slowly making my way through those books. Time’s Convert is a continuation book mainly telling Marcus’s back story. Most of the book takes place in the past during the Revolutionary War. That part dragged a bit for me. I did enjoy the present bits that followed Phoebe’s transformation. It was fun to check back in with Matthew, Diana, and the twins. A few chapters followed their lives after the events of the third book. Similar to the trilogy the ending of this one is left fairly open. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more continuation stories to come!

How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids by Jancee Dunn

What I've Been Reading Lately July - How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids

I bought this book a few years ago when it was available as a Kindle Daily Deal because it sounded really funny. It’s been sitting in my nonfiction collection ever since. As most books I purchase on deals tend to do. Hence my book buying ban.

I’m about halfway through this book and it is hilarious. Dunn is also bravely honest sharing about her marriage and the troubles she and her husband face after having their daughter. When her daughter is six, Dunn realizes that they’ve slowly fallen into a bad pattern of her doing everything while her husband lives a near bachelor existence. She’s a journalist and after gathering lots of research and information, she convinces him to try out a few marriage counselors to try to get things back on track.
