Using Essential Oils to Help Skin Ailments

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. I’m sharing what has worked for me on my journey using essential oils to support my health.

Over the past couple of years, I have incorporated essential oils into my everyday life. I diffuse them to clean the air, boost my immune system, or even lift my mood. Often I add them to my homemade personal care for the aromatherapy benefit or to cleaning products for extra disinfecting power.

I also make DIY roller bottle blends to naturally help ailments from allergies to menstrual cramps to headaches. Today I’m sharing how I use essential oils to help skin ailments with a tea tree roller bottle recipe.

If you are new to essential oils, it’s important to educate yourself on these natural but powerful substances. In my basic guide to beginning with essential oils, I cover the importance of using pure oils, how to find a company that produces them, and safe dilution practices.

Some Things to Keep in Mind:

  • If you haven’t used essential oils before always start with the smallest amount of oil or lowest dilution percentage to see how your body reacts. Avoid using it around your face and other sensitive areas until you’ve tested it.
  • This DIY is for an adult so do not use on children. Some oils should not be used on kids. A low dilution percentage is usually recommended when applying oils topically to children.
  • Be cautious using oils around pets

Tea tree essential oil, also know as melaleuca, is one of the most commonly used oils. It is one of four oils I recommend starting with. Tea tree has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties making it a naturally strong disinfectant. While it is also a powerful immune stimulant, decongestant, and expectorant, I use this roller bottle to combat acne, disinfect minor cuts or abrasions, and heal other skin ailments.

What you need:

  • a 10 mL glass bottle that isn’t clear (you want to protect the oils from UV light) with a roller ball in its housing and a cap
  • tea tree essential oil
  • a carrier oil (I use organic fractionated coconut oil)

I want a 5% dilution since I use this roller bottle for short term acute conditions. My 10 mL bottle is equivalent to 2 teaspoons. I can add 15 drops of essential oil to make it a 5% roller bottle blend. For help with proper dilutions, Plant Therapy has a great dilution chart.

After counting my oil drops, I top the bottle off with my carrier oil. Then I push the roller ball in, screw the cap on and shake it well to mix.

I make sure to label my bottle with the ingredients, the dilution percentage, and the date made.

This roller bottle can be applied directly to acne blemishes, minor wounds, or other ailments such as shingles or athlete’s foot. To keep the roller ball clean, I usually rub the oil onto my finger tips first and use them to apply to the necessary area.

Other Recipes I Use Tea Tree Oil For:

  • I add tea tree essential oil to my all purpose cleaning spray to give it a disinfecting boost.
  • I often add tea tree oil and peppermint to my homemade body wash. It’s my favorite scent combination for a soothing shower.
  • Tea tree is one of the essential oils I add to my basic moisturizer for DIY natural skin care.
