Recently I’ve started experimenting with new natural skin care recipes. For the past couple of years I’ve made all of the basic personal care products my family uses on a daily basis.
This allows me to know exactly what ingredients are in the products we use everyday and cut down on exposure to chemicals and toxins. It’s also an easier process then most people imagine. All you need are a few simple ingredients to create most DIY bath and beauty products.
While there might be a small investment in some of these ingredients upfront, a little goes a long way. It’s much cheaper to make homemade versions than buy them at the store. Plus it cuts down on packaging waste.
I’ve been lucky as an adult with fairly low maintenance skin. Sometimes I deal with a little bit of dryness particularly during the winter months. Now that I’m entering my mid 30s though, I feel it’s time to up my game with my daily skin care routine.
This natural face wash is the perfect combination of cleansing and hydrating. Though optional, I add a boost of rejuvenation with essential oils that are great for all kinds of skin. Natural Face Wash
What You Will Need:
- 1/4 cup raw honey
- 1/4 cup distilled water
- 2 tbsp castile soap (I use unscented)
- 1 tsp avocado oil
- Optional: 12 drops of essential oil (I use 6 drops of lavender, 3 drops of frankincense frereana, and 3 drops of tea tree)
Why These Ingredients?
Honey isn’t just good to consume, it can also be great for natural skin care! Raw honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can keep skin balanced and moisturized. It also helps skin cell’s heal faster.
Using distilled water in your personal care products ensures that the water is free of contaminates like bacteria.
Castile soap is made from vegetable fats and is biodegradable. It’s unique in being both gentle and strong. The strength comes in handy with homemade cleaning supplies. For skin care, it offers a gentle cleanse that is safe even for sensitive skin.
Avocado oil contains a high percentage of Vitamin E among other nutrients to nourish skin. The oleic acid found in avocado oil promotes collagen production which aids healing.
Lavender’s universal benefits as an essential oil apply to skin care too! It soothes skin and can clear up blemishes. It also has healing properties and can reduce scars and wrinkles.
Frankincense frereana is the best type of frankincense for skin care. It is known for it’s rejuvenating properties. It can smooth wrinkles and scars as well as promote the healing of dry or damaged skin.
Tea tree essential oil helps keep skin balanced and soothes irritated skin, reducing redness and healing blemishes, making it a great choice for acne prone skin.
How to Make Natural Face Wash:
This recipe makes just over a half cup of face wash. I use a half pint mason jar for mine with a soap pump lid for easy application.
Add 1/4 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of distilled water to your jar and stir to combine.
Gently mix in 2 tbsp of castile soap to keep it from bubbling up.
Add the tsp of avocado oil to the wash.
Count out your drops of essential oil and stir in.
Cover with the lid and label.
Shake before use to make sure ingredients remain combined.
Pump one or two pumps into your hand and lather onto face. Wash away with warm water.
I use this face wash at least once a day. This amount lasts me 4 to 6 weeks.
Notes and Variations for Face Wash:
This recipe could easily be doubled.
You can use any type of liquid carrier oil in place of avocado oil.
Feel free to skip the essential oils or come up with a blend that works for your skin type. It’s fun to test out different combinations for their scents and benefits. Check out my guide, Essential Oils for Natural Skin Care, to learn more.
