Curious how this TBR went? Check out my Fall Wrap Up.
It’s that time of year again! My favorite season has arrived.
I know some people don’t start their fall reading until it’s actually autumn. But for me as soon as September 1st hits I like to dive into my Fall TBR!
With holiday reading taking up a big chunk of the end of autumn, I like to start early to make the most of my favorite reading season.
Of course it will still feel like summer outside here for a couple months but we have good imaginations.
Inside I’m lighting fall candles, wearing as light of clothes as possible to curl up under a cozy blanket, and taking a little pumpkin spice with my coffee – even if it’s occasionally iced.
The fall decorations are out. I’m eagerly awaiting baby pumpkins to arrive at the store. And we can always put on a fall inspired ASMR room to help the pretending.
Last Fall
Last fall I branched out into some new and spookier areas with my TBR. I had quite a few new releases, lots of thrillers, some dark academia, and the overall tone of the reading list was pretty dark for me.
My only cozy options were a few romances and small town stories.
I knew that TBR was overly ambitious with 34 titles for my reading life at the time. I managed to read 21 of those books by the end of November. And I had quite a few misses.
My reading life this year is very different than last fall.
For one I’m reading a lot more. At least 80% of what I read is romance. And I’m happy with that.
I wanted my book choices for my 2023 Fall TBR to reflect my current reading tastes while still feeling in line with the vibes of the season.
What I Looked For this Fall on my TBR
This year I followed my reading heart and leaned heavily into romance with my fall reading selections.
I picked some fun romance subcategories to bring on those autumn vibes with paranormal, monster, alien, and dark/serial killer romance.
With The Wedding Wish by Erin Sterling being delayed to next fall, I only have one new release on this year’s TBR. But I’m anticipating it so hard!
I also wanted to embrace Halloween and Thanksgiving with themed reads celebrating each. I found a few themed romance recommendations and asked bookstagram to help me choose which to include. That in itself was a new and fun experience!
Of course no Fall TBR of mine would be complete without a thriller and mystery section. I have a few of each to cleanse my palette between romances and hopefully give my reading life some spooky vibes.
Witchy reads will always make my Fall TBR! They have a special category of their own.
After consulting bookstagram with my Fall TBR story series, I also included a magical realism category with a couple of second chance titles that I didn’t get to last fall.
I also have a small oddballs section for two authors who don’t fit into these autumn categories but I’ve been wanting to try for a long time.
Claire Kent is known for her dystopian romance so I’m trying the first book in her Kindled series. Flock by Kate Stewart has been described as a thrilling yet bizarre romance with elements of suspense so fall seems like a great time to try that one too.
My 2023 Fall TBR
This TBR has one more book than last year’s making it my biggest reading list yet! I love having a large selection to mood read from.
We will see how many I can check off. I’m really excited for each of these titles and very happy with the variety I was able to fit in.
Here are the 35 titles that made my Fall reading list this year!

I love love love small town stories – and I agree – they definitely make me feel all warm and cozy. This is an epic reading list (thank you so much for the recommendations!) ALSO – I can never seem to get enough of “opposites attract” will-they? won’t-they? romance reads! Give me a slow burn romance any day! I just recently finished a book with a similar(ish) feel called “Pretend with Me” by Emily Mayer (http://emilymayerbooks.com/) The book follows leading lady, Sutton, on her trip back to her small hometown in the South to help take care of her dad who recently injured himself. It’s as if everything has been preserved in time. Her mom still works at the same place, the gossip is still the same, her sister hasn’t changed a bit (complete nightmare) BUT(!) she is getting married – GASP- to Sutton’s childhood dream guy.. Now let’s add a very eligible brother to the mix and that’s all I’m going to share. I laughed, I cringed, I stayed up way too late reading this and now I’m left wanting more (good things it’s book 1 in the Beacon Hill series). If you do end up checking this out, I would love to know what you think.
I adore small town and opposites attract! Some these romances are small town just with monsters lol. Slow burn has to be done just right for me – it’s not my favorite trope, but I’m currently reading Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross and still loving it even with the slow burn. Oooo, that set up sounds juicy! Thanks for the rec!
Ambitious should be your middle name! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these!
Thanks ? At least 4 of them will be on September’s mid month recap!
