End of September Book Review

Time for the end of September book review! I have gotten behind this month on my reading, what with getting married, a honeymoon, a camping trip, a family reunion and packing up our whole lives for our trip back east. I only finished 3 books in the last half of the month. Luckily, I was ahead for the year to hit my reading goal of 100 books. I think audiobooks will be a wonderful addition to our road trip if we can find wifi to download library books via Libby. We’ve already listened to The Gunslinger by Stephen King (see below).

End of September Book Review Halpern Cover

Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern

In this nonfiction book, Justin Halpern moves back in with his parents in his late 20s and starts posting on twitter the things his 70 something father says. The tweets take off and eventually he receives an offer to turn the things his dad said into a book of stories, thoughts, and advice. I listened to this short book on audio and it was hilarious! My husband listened to it too and loved it. Halpern’s father’s matter of fact words on life were gruff and funny and made the father-son moments in the book all the sweeter.

End of September Book Review Harbor Lights Cover

Harbor Lights by Sherryl Woods

Harbor Lights is the third book in Woods’ Chesapeake Shores series. It follows Kevin O’Brien, a recent widower and single father, as he moves back home to recover and raise his son with family. He meets a recently divorced Shanna Carlyle when she opens a new bookstore in town. She is recovering from her own traumas. A friendship forms and sparks fly. While it took me way too long to read this book, I enjoyed the story. I mean it has a bookseller in it! What more could I ask for? I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

End of September Book Review Gunslinger Cover

The Gunslinger by Stephen King

This is the first book in King’s Dark Tower series. The only Stephen King book I’ve read before is his memoir, On Writing. I love that book but the horror genre is usually too scary for me. I saw The Dark Tower movie last year and thought it was pretty good despite the questionable reviews. When the audiobook was available on Libby, I thought I’d give it a try for our road trip. My sister-in-law also just finished listening to the whole series and encouraged us to check it out.

It seemed somewhat like a fantasy western to me so it was pretty cool to listen to as we traveled through desolate high desert and wondered how people used to cross the country by horse and wagon. The book was a little slow in the story and world building for me but I’ve heard that the other books are better and faster paced. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Here are my book stats for the month of September:

Total Books Read: 8

6 Female Authors and 2 Male Authors

Nationalities: 8 American

4 Nonfiction and 4 Fiction

Format: 5 Physical Books and 3 Audiobooks

Source: 3 Already Own, 2 Library Books, 3 Libby

Total Pages Read: 1,551 pages

Total Hours Listened: 19 hours, 25 minutes
