Spooky season is upon us!
As you know from my overly ambitious fall TBR, I am all about the autumnal reading. I love spending part of my Halloween celebrating by reading its own specific book. It’s a reading tradition I’ve had for the last 3+ years.
To ensure that I can actually complete the book on Halloween Day, I’ve started selecting a graphic novel to read on October 31st.
Graphic novels are fun, immersive, and likely to be a fast read. That makes them perfect to enjoy for an hour in the afternoon or to squeeze one last spooky read in before bed.
Today I’m sharing two books I’ve already read on past Halloweens and one that I have lined up to enjoy this year!
3 Graphic Novels Perfect for Halloween:
Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks
Every autumn, Deja and Josiah pick up where their friendship left off working at the best pumpkin patch in the world!
This Halloween is a little different though. They are seniors and this is the last shift of their last autumn together.
Josiah is feeling all the feels about it, but Deja is determined their last shift will be an adventure! She’s ready to see all the sights, taste all the goodies, and even convince Josiah to go talk to the cute girl he’s been crushing on for past three years.
If your favorite thing about Halloween is the pumpkins and all the yummy treats, this is the story for you.
I love everything about this graphic novel! I want to visit this pumpkin patch and eat everything that is listed here for many more days than just Halloween.
The illustrations are amazing as is the map! I found this story to be completely immersive and also filled with nostalgia. The setting is 5 stars and the story is just as sweet.
Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu
Nova is a witch working in her grandmothers’ shop and investigating supernatural occurrences in town. One night she is surprised to find Tam, her childhood friend who’s now a werewolf, battling a horse demon in the woods.
Tam has been wandering from town to town for years unable to settle down. Now pursued by evil forces who want the power of the wolf, Tam turns to Nova for help. As they try to figure out what is going on and how to protect Tam, past feelings come to the surface.
If you’re craving some magic this Halloween season, this is the book for you!
I loved the characters, the setting, and the illustrations. For such a short format, there’s a lot of complexity in the characters and the battle against the evil forces in town. I wish it was a series! It also has great LBGTQ+ representation.
Fangs by Sarah Andersen
This one made it onto my current fall tbr since I missed out on it last year. It isn’t as popular a graphic novel as the other two so I was very excited to find a library nearby that had a copy!
Elsie is a 300 year old vampire who has never met her match. Until one night in a bar, she meets Jimmy, a charismatic werewolf. They begin a relationship enjoying horror films and books, nighttime strolls, and combining their unusual lifestyles.
On Goodreads, it states, “Fangs chronicles the humor, sweetness, and awkwardness of meeting someone perfectly suited to you but also vastly different. Filled with Sarah Andersen’s beautiful gothic illustrations and relatable relationship humor.”
If you love vampires or the paranormal, this may be the one for you. When I was checking it out, the librarian told me it’s very cute read. I can’t wait!
